Phillip Lim hopes his UGG collaboration for men will inspire a “laid-back sense of cool”.
The fashion designer has teamed up with the footwear brand for a limited-edition capsule collection which will debut during the upcoming 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall 17 men’s show.
There are four styles on offer; the classic high, classic short, outdoor high and outdoor short, with Lim giving each a personal touch such as a plaid print and zipper details.
“As a designer, I am constantly interested in exploring unexpected elements to create new aesthetic propositions,” he told WWD. “One of the reasons I wanted to collaborate with UGG is because I felt that together we could create a collection that would inspire a laid-back sense of cool. The approach stemmed from my California roots and memories of wearing UGG.”
He had no intention to change the original look of the shoes, citing the oft used phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Lim is a big fan of how “uncomplicated” and “indulgent” UGG shoes are and all he wanted to do was add to them.
“The challenge and fun of the collaboration was to honour the perfect simplicity of the UGG form while adding a 3.1 Phillip Lim stamp,” he smiled.
Andrea O’Donnell, president of fashion lifestyle for company Deckers Brands, notes this is the first time the Australian shoe company has partnered with a designer for men’s offerings and she hopes this will help the area grow. With male offerings making up 15 per cent of sales and going up by double digits each year, O’Donnell is looking forward to seeing its success continue to rise.
“We are putting a lot more investment in marketing, design and distribution to really get traction in the men’s market,” she said. “To do that we have to have a broad appeal, but we need to be cool and have a youthful outlook and we will be looking to more people who can help us stretch our DNA.”
The UGG x 3.1 Phillip Lim footwear start at $250 (£205).
