Tim Coppens is giving more “romance” to his designs.
The Belgian-born fashion star has been tapped as menswear guest designer at Pitti Uomo’s fall edition in Florence, which kicks off on Tuesday (10Jan17) and runs for four days. His eponymous brand is famous for its athleisure wear and with the advancements in technology making garments even better, Coppens is excited to show off his new line.
“Everybody caught up so we’re bringing more romance to our collection,” he told WWD. “We’ve done a lot but we’ve never felt pushed or contrived. But we also thought it was important to create an extra layer this time outside the four walls of this studio. So showing at Pitti now is perfect – 2016 is when all things came together and Pitti is the cherry on top and the opportunity to showcase what the brand stands for.”
He describes being chosen by the event as a “huge honour” and he can’t wait to put his label on display to a new audience. It’s the first time he’s showing his own brand in Europe, and to mark the occasion he created an 180-page book to accompany the presentation.
“(It’s) a sketchbook – it has very personal touches,” he smiled of the tome, which consists of old photos, passport pictures and images which have inspired him. “It’s a very in-depth look. I’ve never done anything like this before but I thought it was a cool opportunity and shows how my brain works.”
His Pitti Uomo collection is based on two characters, Max and Tequila; a man and woman living in apocalyptic times with inspiration from Mad Max. The show will be live-steamed on Instagram, with four cameras capturing garments such as a limited-edition hooded sweater and a leather bomber jacket with ‘Tequila’ printed on the back.
“We’re hoping to show that Tim Coppens makes more than just a nice jacket,” he added. “For me, classic tailoring is as important as a track pant. We will keep blending the two worlds using luxe and tech fabrics.”
